This is an advanced skills webinar that will present an innovative approach that integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Schema Therapy to work with couples where one or both partners have narcissistic traits. The webinar will describe how to use the Schema Questionnaire as a diagnostic tool to identify traits of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), how to distinguish between NPD and other personality disorders, how to formulate narcissistic abuse, and how to apply behavioral interventions to work with these couples.

The webinar will help you recognize signs of narcissistic abuse in relationships including how trauma bonding, Stockholm Syndrome, and cognitive dissonance keep partners stuck in abusive dynamics. You will know how to break these cycles of abuse by working with couples toward changing these patterns or ending the relationship. You will underhand how to identify the behavioral coping mechanisms that individuals with NPD present with including gaslighting, reverse victim offender, love bombing, blame shifting, triangulating, DARVO and more; as well as how to work with partners to assess empathy levels, willingness, and capacity to change.

Finally, you will learn specific behavioral techniques including Nonviolent Communication, values clarification, Reverse DARVO, empathy assessment, behavioral experiments, assertiveness training, self-care consequences, mindfulness, and detached empathy to help partners break the cycle of abuse. The webinar will provide a conceptual framework, experiential exercises, and role-plays to help participants apply a behavioral model to work with couples who are stuck in narcissistic relational dynamics.

2. Understand the formulation of how partners get stuck in abusive relational dynamics

3. Apply behavioral interventions to work with couples with narcissistic traits


About the presenter:

Avigail Lev, PsyD, is a psychotherapist, author, and executive coach in the Bay Area. She is the director of the Bay Area CBT Center, a clinic in San Francisco and Oakland that provides Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for individuals and couples. She specializes in integrating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Schema Therapy and has coauthored three books on strengthening relationships including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Interpersonal ProblemsThe Interpersonal Problems Workbookand Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Couples. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and provides consultation, trainings, and workshops on utilizing evidence-based treatments.
